The Port of Avatiu is the principal port of the Cook Islands, located next to Pununga Nui markets in the main hub of Avarua. The newly redeveloped Avatiu harbour was opened in April 2013, and Avatiu harbour now provides a greater capacity to cater for larger vessels and the deeper harbour entrance and turning circle allows for larger vessels to berth in the harbour. The port handles about 90% of food imports and 100% of the country’s fuel supply.
